Embedding Social Emotional Learning in Refugee Contexts

Designing for Education in Emergency Contexts
A leading humanitarian aid agency engaged with Quicksand to better understand and design for education in emergency contexts. The project focused on incorporating aspects of Social Emotional Learning (SEL), with a specific focus on primary school students. The goal was to design a flexible and durable learning and teaching experience that dramatically improves a child’s acquisition of SEL skills and literacy in their primary school years.
Phases of the Project
The project had three distinct phases: an initial context setting engagement, a field research phase engaging with stakeholders in context, and an immersive workshop setting. The workshop served as a foundation for ideation around new programmatic interventions.
Core Concepts for Development
Three core concepts emerged for further development and piloting and will be used in refugee settings around the world.
