Unpacking the Role of Low-income Parents as Education Partners
The Challenge of Supporting Parents in Children’s Education
A non-government organisation sought to improve the learning experience of low-income students by understanding the role of parents during and after the pandemic. Curiosity designed this research program to learn how parents support their children’s learning and the challenges they face.
Mixed-Method Case Study
The study involved interviews with parents, their children, and their secondary support networks to understand how learning occurred at home and during face-to-face classes. User Personas identified parent profiles, and the Jobs to be Done framework explored the value of education. The Learning Journey framework identified gaps in the education system that parents try to fill.
Key Insights
Parents view a college diploma as a way to provide their children with better opportunities and protection against unfair treatment. They saw character development and a positive attitude towards education as markers of success. The pandemic highlighted both challenges and their active roles in their children’s education, including their difficulties with teaching and the need for various forms of support.
