Developing Sanitaryware for Muslim Needs 

Kohler sought to develop innovative sanitaryware products that specifically addressed the needs of Muslim users. The project explored opportunities related to Muslim cleaning rituals, such as Wudu and Istinja.

Iterative Design and Testing Process 

The project began with user research, ethnographic research, observations and interviews with experts.... Key opportunity areas related to Muslim cleaning rituals and beliefs were identified. Concept ideas were developed and tested with potential users to determine design principles. Real-size prototypes were created and tested with homeowners and business users to gain usability feedback. Working prototypes were also tested with potential users, developers, architects, technicians and Muslim experts to evaluate usability and to discuss price points and adoption. Input from Muslim experts was used to appropriately design, communicate and implement the products. The client team worked closely with the project team during all project phases.

Innovative Sanitaryware Products 

The project resulted in the launch of the Kohler Rivlet to the market and the Urinal Istina is still under development. The project has received several international awards.
