Richard van der Laken
KEYNOTE
Richard van der Laken is a Dutch graphic designer and entrepreneur, and an advocate for the power of design for change. In 2010, he co-founded What Design Can Do (WDCD). WDCD is an international, multidisciplinary initiative utilising the power of design and creativity to transform society. Starting as a small conference in The Netherlands, over the years WDCD has grown to become an international platform showcasing the impact of design, now active in Amsterdam, São Paulo, Mexico City, New Delhi and Nairobi. WDCD along with partners like the IKEA Foundation and UNHCR, invites the international design community to take on global design challenges like the Climate Action Challenge, to come up with high quality game-changing ideas for a better world.
In 1995 Richard founded De Designpolitie, together with Pepijn Zurburg, an award-winning graphic design agency that strongly shaped the cultural scene in Holland. The Designpolitie has exhibited at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, MoMA New York, MoMA San Francisco, Institut Néerlandais Paris, Brno Tsjechia and Graphic Design Museum, Breda. Over the years Richard has been honoured with many awards and nominations, such as D&AD, Design Museum – Design Of The Year, ADCN (Art Directors Club Netherlands), Dutch Design Awards and more. Among other projects, he’s one of the designers behind ‘Gorilla’, a visual column that comments on current affairs published on Dutch newspaper De Volkskrant and on the independent news magazine De Groene Amsterdammer.
Sophie Thomas
KEYNOTE
Sophie is an unusual mix of creative campaigner, practicing designer and agitator. She has been working in the fields of sustainable design, material process and behaviour change for over 20 years, investigating and promoting circular economy design principles. She founded Thomas.Matthews in 1997, an award winning sustainable communication design agency, creating innovative and highly sustainable design for communication and new models for circular business for major organisations and businesses, defining the role of designers within the discussion around waste streams, critical elements and resource efficiency.
Sophie plays a vocal part in promoting sustainable thinking through education and business: she’s been Director of Circular Economy at the RSA, is a trustee for WRAP UK and has been awarded an Honorary Fellowship at UAL. She founded The Great Recovery, a programme to build capacity and understanding of circular design in the materials supply chain. She also started the education initiative Three Trees Don’t Make a Forest and the events and network group Greengaged. Sophie is the voice of sustainability on numerous design panels and the voice of design in waste debates. She’s one of the first designers to become a Chartered Waste Manager (CIWM) for her work around designing out waste streams and circular system design and has been nominated twice for CIWM’s Industry Leader of the Year. She is included in Who’s Who and in the 30 Waste Influencers List, and sits on a number of advisory panels for sustainable design.
Babitha George (Quicksand, India)
Babitha is a partner at Quicksand, an India-based multi-disciplinary innovation consulting firm. She anchors Quicksand’s Bangalore studio and is on the Advisory Board of the Victor Papanek Foundation. She is one of the co-founders of UnBox Festival, a celebration of collaborations at the intersection of different disciplines (design, social innovation, culture, technology, art and enterprise). Her work spans clients across many sectors — public services like health, sanitation and financial inclusion, and private companies to develop new products and services. She was featured in the British Council’s “Blurring the Lines” exhibition in London, as one of 16 people from around the world reinventing creative exploration and participation in their respective communities.
László Herczeg (The Care Lab, Spain & Singapore)
László is an experience designer and co-founder of the Care Lab, a Barcelona-based collaborative platform of activists willing to start a movement to transform Care, driving change through human-centred design practices in the health, social and education sectors. He has been working in the area of health and care for almost two decades. In 2008, he co-founded fuelfor Healthcare Innovation, an innovation design consultancy specialised in health care. Prior to that, he was a senior design consultant in the global healthcare team of Philips Design. He has led several award-winning innovation projects, for both public and private sector, working with a variety of healthcare and pharmaceutical corporations to define insight-based design strategies for new medical equipment, services and solutions. His work -Who Cares?-, that envisions a better future for caregivers in Singapore, has been nominated Design of the Year 2018 by the President*s Design Award.
Fumiko Ichikawa (Re:public, Japan)
Fumiko is the co-founder and managing director at Re:public, a think-and-do tank based in Tokyo and Fukuoka, Japan. After receiving her Masters degree in Human Computer Interaction from Keio University, she has worked with many leading companies and design offices, where she took lead in global design research based in Finland, China, and Japan. After the financial crisis and the great earthquake that took place in Northern Japan in 2011, she co-founded Re:public, with the mission of empowering individuals and developing innovation platforms for the better future, together with national and regional governments, companies of all sizes, and educational institutes. She also organizes a Serial Innovators consortium, an alliance where she studies how innovators create and deliver breakthrough innovations.
Cal Bruns (Matchboxology, South Africa)
In 2005 Cal Bruns co-founded and is Chief Innovationist of Matchboxology, Africa’s first human-centered design consultancy. From offices in Cape Town and Johannesburg in South Africa and Dar es Salaam in Tanzania, Matchboxology applies design thinking, cognitive empathy and their African expertise in collective problem solving to help leaders in the public and private sectors improve systems and behaviours that generate better outcomes in healthcare, policy, entrepreneurship and social advancement across the continent. Cal and his team have created measurable impact for multi-national brands Levi’s® and Adidas, global funders like USAID, UKAID, Mastercard Foundation and The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation as well as for African governments across the continent. He has been the Loeries Shared Value/Ubuntu award jury chairman three times and was the inaugural gold statue winner of the award in 2010.
Josephine Wong (Apogee, China)
Jo is the co-founder and principal at Apogee and co-founder of Make Meaningful Work, as well as the co-founder of UX Hong Kong. Working across mainland China and multicultural Hong Kong, Jo has extensively collaborated with global teams, conducting design research and usability testing. She attended Melbourne University, completing a Bachelor of Social Science in Information Management. She is a member of the Usability Professionals’ Association (UPA) Hong Kong Chapter. She is passionate about the environment, political and economic systems; and discovering how we can live healthier, happier lives without adversely impacting less fortunate people.
Chris Marmo (Paper Giant, Australia)
Chris is the co-founder and Research Director of Paper Giant, a cross-disciplinary design and research practice based in Melbourne, Australia. He is a design researcher with over a decade of experience in conducting projects across a range of industries and contexts, in Australia and throughout Asia. He holds a PhD in Ubiquitous Computing from Rmit University in Melbourne, where his work focused on the relation between technology, people and space.He has worked extensively across the public and private sector, helping organisations framing complexity applying service design and design research methodologies.
Camila Boga (Flutter Innovation, Brasil)
Camila is a Design Lead and Managing Partner at Flutter Innovation, a design networking enterprise based in São Paulo, Brazil. Over the last ten years, she has been leading innovation projects for large companies as well as impactful projects for startups. She holds an MBA in Branding Strategy and attended professional development courses in Strategic Design at Central Saint Martins and Parsons Schools of Design.
Slava Kozlov (Summ( )n, Russia & Netherlands)
Slava is the director and a co-founder of Summ()n, based in Russia and the Netherlands. Originally from Kazakhstan, Slava has studied and worked in Russia. He has developed a range of novel methods and tools to conduct contextual research, future studies, cross-cultural and multi-stakeholder analysis, and to enable collaborative, participatory design. Slava was one of the pioneers of using 3D virtual worlds and MMORPGs in research, and actively employs serious games and social web. Before Summ( )n, Slava worked for 10+ years with the Strategic Future Design team of Philips Design, a design house of Philips Electronics in the Netherlands, where he participated in numerous future studies to explore the scenarios of possible developments of enterprises, industries and regions. These projects contributed to the creation of innovative products, services, and brands, for Philips and other clients.
Rikke Ulk (Antropologerne, Denmark)
Rikke is CEO, Chief Anthropologist and founder of the consultancy firm Antropologerne, based in Denmark. An experienced anthropologist, she pioneered the approach of combining anthropology and design methods with co- creation, creating engagement insight and change that is valuable for people, society and the planet. Throughout her career, she has interacted with private and public clients, nurturing a participatory approach driven by design. In 2018 Rikke moved with her family and the company to Samsø – the Energy Island of Denmark – a small place with strong local community and global reach.
José de la O (Studio José de la O, Mexico)
José is the founder of Studio José de la O, located in Mexico City, Mexico. He founded the studio in Eindhoven in 2010, relocating then to his hometown Mexico City. He earned an Industrial Design Bachelor Degree at Iberoamericana University in México City and and a Masters Degree on Conceptual Design on Context at Design Academy Eindhoven. During his time in The Netherlands, Jose de la O was a guest lecturer at the Design Academy Eindhoven. Currently, he is a full time professor at the Monterrey Institute of Technology teaching and generating research work on how to bring design closer to society. De la O is a co-founder and active member of Cooperativa Panorámica, runs the design-driven cultural initiative,”The Chair that Rocks”, is the Creative Director of his Design brand “delaO” and co-produces the Spanish speaking design podcast Fuera de Contexto.
Geke van Dijk (STBY, UK & Netherlands)
Geke is co-founder and strategy director at STBY, a design research consultancy specialised in design research for service innovation, and works for international clients in industry and public sector. She has a background in ethnographic research, user-centered design and services marketing, and holds a PhD in Computer Sciences from the Open University in the UK. She has been one of the early pioneers in the field of Service Design. She co-authored the best selling books This is Service Design Thinking, and DIY Toolkit for Social Innovation. She is the initiator and co-founder of the Service Design Network Netherlands, and an active member of the international Service Design Network. Geke regularly publishes and presents papers on Design Research. She is also a co-founder and active member of the REACH Network for Global Design Research.
Michael Davis Burchat (Big Human, Canada)
Michael is the founder and director at Big Human, a design planning agency based in Toronto, Canada, working with government services, for-profit corporations, and non-government organizations. His professional experience includes Design, Entrepreneurship, Education, and Innovation Planning. Prior to receiving a Masters in Design Methods from the Illinois Institute of Design, in Chicago, Michael was a Professor of Industrial Design at Humber College, in Toronto. He has experience in the domains of corporate strategy, design strategy, consumer insights, business-process design and concept making, having led design-research planning, portfolio studies, and work practice innovation projects as Product-Portfolio Manager at Nokia. He is particularly interested in the topic of mastery and the forces that confound it during innovation planning.
Nicolas Gaudron (idsl, France)
Nicolas is the founder of idsl, an innovation consultancy and design company specialised in designing interactions, based in Paris and Bordeaux, France. He holds a Master of Arts in Design Products from the Royal College of Art in London. After working at IDEO Palo Alto (California), he worked at INRIA (French National Institute for Research in Computer Science and Control) as product / interaction designer. He then joined Renault’s “Prospective & Concept Cars” design studio where he has contributed to the development of the Human-Machine Interaction group. He talks and teaches in design, engineering and business schools about innovation methodology, design thinking and interaction and service design. His work has won several awards, been exhibited and published in France and abroad.
